Magnus the Red Master of Prospero Book review spoiler free...ish

Magnus the Red Master of Prospero by Graham McNeill.

Magnus the Red is one of the most powerful human psykers who has existed. He is known for being forever in the pursuit of knowledge, but the fatal flaw of never knowing when enough is enough, which eventually will damn him and his legion. But at this point in time, it is before the summit at Nikea, and his terrible mistake that costs the Emperor the Imperial Webway project. This storyline revolves around the evacuation of a planet that is destroying itself through its unstable tectonic forces. This is only a secondary objective for Magnus, whose eye is really set upon the planet's repository of knowledge to be taken back to the library on Prospero. This book focuses on the more arcane side of the 40k universe, and a demonic cult is included along with the ever-existing question that follows the Thousand Sons legion and its members: should any knowledge be forbidden, and who decides what the limit is?

For me, it was a middle-of-the-road book in this excellent series. You get to read some of the awesome feats of Warp-related feats of strength Magnus is capable of. There is also a theme that follows, with Perturabo's initial influence on Magnus. You see the initial seedings of an alternative objective of the Great Crusade than the original dream of the Emperors. Any fans of the more mystic side of the 40k universe will like this one. Ahriman is a recurring character here, so any fans of the later Ahriman trilogy might like to see what he was like in the Crusades' better days.
